Who Needs Home Oxygen?

Home oxygen therapy is prescribed for patients whose blood oxygen levels are chronically low — a condition known as hypoxemia. This is most commonly seen in patients with:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Severe asthma
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Post-COVID respiratory impairment

Oxygen therapy is prescribed by a physician based on blood gas tests or oximetry results meeting clinical criteria (typically SpO₂ ≤ 88% or PaO₂ ≤ 55 mmHg at rest). In Ontario, ADP provides funding support for eligible long-term oxygen users.

Types of Home Oxygen Equipment

Stationary Oxygen Concentrators

Stationary concentrators draw in room air and extract oxygen for continuous delivery. They are ideal for patients requiring oxygen during rest, sleep, or low-activity periods at home. No refills required — they run on electricity.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs)

Portable concentrators allow patients to maintain mobility and independence — whether walking, travelling, or running errands. They run on battery or vehicle power and are available in pulse-dose and continuous-flow models.
